Massage and the Body

I had a massage the other day -  it great!  Afterwards though, I felt a little dizzy, a bit sore and quite sick. I hadn't had a massage for a while and I was surprised it had this effect on me. When I spoke to my massage therapist, she mentioned that massage releases the toxins in our body which are then eliminated through the liver and kidneys.  This can result in a feeling of nausea. Nausea after a massage can also result from a lack of hydration.  We recommend our clients drink water before and after a massage if possible.  Drinking enough water is essential to our good health and assists with the detoxification process of the body.  There are many benefits to the body to stay well hydrated, and doing so can also help alleviate any headaches experienced after a massage.

I have decided I am going to make time for a regular massage (one of the perks with working in a day spa!).  I like the idea of toxins being removed from my body. Toxins can be caused through the foods we eat, the environment, our lifestyle and other factors including stress, anxiety and our emotions.  So a good massage is great for the body, the mind and our emotional well being.

Before you head in for your next massage, discuss your requirements with your massage therapist - they will be able to tailor the massage to suit your needs.  And remember, never get a massage from someone who isn't property qualified (unless its a loved one of course).  They can do more harm than good!

Choosing Skin Care Products

Everything you put on your skin is eventually absorbed into your system, therefore you need to be very particular about the ingredients contained in the products you use.  Unfortunately these days we are seeing a mix of chemicals, preservatives and tiny plastics being added to our beauty products.  Before you put anything on your skin read the label to see what it contains and what the active ingredients are - you might be surprised.  Some products contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment and you would think twice about putting them on your skin.

My staff and I have found that products containing natural botanicals and essential oils have been the best products to use on our skin.  Not only are they natural, but they are nutrient rich and contain vitamins that are anti-ageing.  We recommend a product that is handmade to order in Brisbane Australia.  These products embrace a holistic solution for beautiful skin and provide a sensory aromatic experience to transform, replenish and rejuvenate the skin.

Before you buy any products for your skin, do your research.  If you stay clear from harmful chemicals, preservatives and tiny plastics you are on the best path for improving your skin and helping our environment.  Contact us today to discuss the skin care products we use and recommend.

Investing In Your Health and Wellbeing

My accountant gave me some advice years ago that I've never forgotten - its been like a mantra that I've used throughout my life.  He said "the best investment you can ever make is in yourself".  That advice really intrigued me, because initially I thought surely buying a property or shares would be a great long term investment.  But the more I thought about it, the more I realised how true this advice was.

In our current age of stress and anxiety, where many diets see a high intake of salt and sugar, its important to focus on our health and wellbeing.  We want to lead healthy and active lives for as long as we can.  Maintaining our health and well being can potentially reduce medical and pharmacy costs in our old age and means we can work and earn income for a longer period of time, which has benefits for our retirement.

They key to investing in yourself is to remain active, have a healthy diet and reduce stress.  We recommend having a regular massage by a trained professional, or a loved one, You will be amazed the positive effect a massage has on the mind and body.  Invest in yourself and you will definitely thank yourself for it later in life!

Your Skin and the Sun

Welcome to Clove Day Spa Weekly Blog

Your Skin and the Sun

The other day I went to get my skin checked for skin cancer. I was really caught off guard when the Doctor saw something odd on my face and instantly decided to remove it.  I had noticed the thing myself - it was really annoying me.  It popped up about 6 months ago and I thought it was a pimple, however when it didn't disappear I thought it could be something more sinister!  So off to the Doctor I went and a short time later I walked out with a small hole in my face,  a surgical band aid covering it and what must have been a very worried look on my face.  The red blotch was being sent away for testing to see if it was cancerous.  Thankfully the results came through a couple of days later and I gave a big sigh of relief when I was told the results were negative.

This whole episode made me think very carefully about my skin routine and how I can ensure I don't get skin cancer and sun damage.  I must admit, growing up in Queensland I loved being out in the sun, and I did tend to get burnt occasionally when I was young, so I do have to be very vigilant now with getting my skin checked regularly.

The Doctor I saw on the day said the best thing we can do for our skin is use a moisturiser with SPF in it.  I mentioned I use a foundation with SPF and I wear it everyday.  He said its not as good as moisturiser, but it will do.  Australians tend to see a lot of sun, and protecting our skin is extremely important for everyone - men, women and children.  Your sun protection routine must start first thing in the morning and continue right up until night time.  Not only should you use products on your face and body with SPF, but wearing a hat and sunglasses and a long sleeved shirt is also very important.

I have to go back to the Doctor in 12 months to get my skin checked again
, and I am very grateful I have access to someone who specialises in this field and can help me with this.  If you can't access a Doctor or skin specialist, please ask a relative or friend to help you check your body over - it could save your life!
